 7 4 . | . . 9 | . . .
 3 . 9 | . 8 7 | 2 . .
-------+-------+------
 . 9 . | 7 2 . | 1 5 3
 . 3 . | . . 5 | 9 . 7
 5 1 7 | . 9 3 | . 2 .

Whilst Pat is entirely correct, I think it may be worth clarifying that this creates a situation commonly referred to as locked candidates, which implies you can remove 1's as candidates from other cells in Box 8.

thank you for the help but i need a more specific answer.
i know the 1 for column 6 goes into box 8 but i can't decide between rows 8 and 9 because the 1 for column 3 goes into box 7 rows 8 and 9 as well.

actually, i should say how did you find the answer for the 1 in box 8? how did you eliminate the 1 from row 9?

I think there might be little steps not one big one. You don't eliminate the 1 in row 9, not yet.

After you sort out the locked 1s in box 8 then look for where the 4s go in box 8 then in box 7. Then you'll have a place for 1 in box 7. After that there are a string of hidden singles all over the place, meanwhile the 1s in box 8 are all still in column 6. Don't give up - all will be revealed.
