Anyone else finding that the section usually containing the samurai was missing from their Times today?

No, I had mine. It's in the books section, which is hidden inside the travel section.

The samurai was good today and i did it in 49 mins
I think the times may have responded to our critisizm about fiendish sudoku's because todays one was harder and took me over ten minutes

I was a bit disappointed in this week's Samurai - I thought with the way each of the individual puzzles had it's own symmetry (I think this is the first of the Samurai's that has been so unsymmetrical overall - call me a purist but I thought it was inelegant) that they might have worked a little more difficulty into it. It took me 27 mins - about 8 mins to complete the interlocking grids and then fairly straightforward mild/easy ones for the 5 individual puzzles thereafter. I'd still love to see a Samurai that used some fiendish techniques (pairs/triples), especially in order to complete the interlocking grids.

I have to laugh though... I then had a mental block and took over 15 mins to complete the fiendish. Per TSO, the Times do look to have reverted to Pappocom's hard puzzles for the fiendish again.

Yeah... My entire travel section was missing. That's the last time that I ask my mum to buy a newspaper for me...

Hehehe. You missed it, didn't you.

I didn't spot it until I'd written in a dozen or so numbers, then the cleverness of the original grid hit me.....

I guess I should say thanks for pointing that out to me ?

And it's out by 45 degrees - I'm still a purist:)

I managed to solve it by doing the outer 4 sudokus first, then the middle. Top right hand side first then top left, bottom left, bottom right then the centre.

In each case I managed to complete each 9x9 in its entirity before the centre one!

Yes, I think the downside to the novelty grid this week was that is was considerably simpler than usual - the crucial 4 overlap boxes could be filled extremely quickly. When you say you completed each outer grid entirely before doing the centre one, I assume this was still using information from the centre grid when solving the outer ones. I'd be very disappointed if it turned out the outer grids could be solved in isolation.

Correct assumption. But normally the overlapping boxes cannot be completely solved without having spent some time on the inner 9x9 and the relevent outer 9x9. This weeks samurai seemed easier for this reason.
