Take a close look at the number 7...

(And can you do me a favor? next time you post a puzzle add the date aswell... I find it easier to look up the puzzle by date then by number (If I would need to look it up that is)

I've got it to this stage and can get no further on 'logic' alone. I have an excel based program that displays possible values, which normally allows me to indirectly find even the fiendish solutions, but this one just stumps me.
I have a feeling the solution has something to do with having number pairs in 3 cells. However I can't see the next step.
i.e. I have 7 or 9 in cells r1c2 r3c2 and r2c8 also the values 2 or 8 in r6c2 r9c2 and r6c9. Please help it's driving me mad !!

It has to do with row 1. Take a close look at the values 1, 3 and 4, you can eliminate them as candidates from some cells on that row...

When you figured out which one you should look at box 3, there is an intresting thing in it...

And if you figured what the intresting move was, then you should take another close look at box 3, there is another intresting thing in it...

Animator, thanks that's moved me on. Still not there yet but with a bit of concentration I think I should get it now. It's given me a new elimination algorithm to add to my armoury anyway.

Will come back once I've spotted your second clue.

Yup me too, had to do some real work for a while but when I looked at it again it I saw what you were hinting at in box 3. Useful tip that, now need to work out how to 'code' it in excel, just so I can check my own mental workings you understand!
