There are clues missing I suppose

Postby claudiarabia » Sat Oct 28, 2006 10:25 pm

Hi,

When I started to be a member of the forum I downloades several Sudokus by typing them by Hand into a Sudoku-Matrix.

I found this sudoku and now I wanted to solve it but it has to much solutions. I guess I forget to type in some clues or I typed a wrong one. I browsed half an hour but with no success. The shape is very characteristic. I think the puzzle was made by one of the following people: tso, gsf, JPF, fermat or ocean. Can somebody of you remember the puzzle and complete it, please. I would be happy to have the original.
Code: Select all
. 7 . . . 2 . 3 .
9 . . . . . . 2 .
. . . 9 . . 1 . .
. . 3 . . . . . .
. . . . . 3 9 . .
1 . . . 2 . . . .
. . 7 . 4 . 6 . .
8 5 . . . . . . 1
. . . . . . . 4 .

Thank you for search

The puzzle is hopelessly non-symmetric.

I hoped to be able to derive the missing clues by logic, but it is a waste of time.

In fact, it is a waste of time to focus on any given puzzle. There are a zillion valid puzzles out there. And books full.

Just forget you ever saw this puzzle and instead go get a nice new one.

I would say "even better, forget SuDoku and go get a life", but that applies to me, too.

It look perfectly symmetrical on the \-diagonal to me! Yes, I need a life, too.

Diagonal reflection

You need a Megaclue:)

It's not an easy pattern.
The best one I was able to do is this minimal 20 clues with the same symmetry.
Code: Select all
 . 6 . . . 2 . 8 .
 5 . . . . . . 9 .
 . . . 1 . . 2 . .
 . . 1 . . . . . .
 . . . . . 4 7 . .
 6 . . . 5 . . . .
 . . 7 . 9 . 3 . .
 9 8 . . . . . 6 4
 . . . . . . . 1 .

any solution ?

I always admired with which easy hand you construct your 20clue-puzzles. And you kept the pattern. That will be a worthy successor of the invalid puzzle. But I'll keep my eyes open. Maybe I spot the original by accident. Or it is an X-Sudoku. Thank you, it's so lovely.

I can't find any solution for the possible candidates 1347 for r1c1, so I presume the answer to your question is no, or show me where I went wrong.

Now I see it! Can you believe that I have never noticed any puzzle that was symmetric on just one diagonal. To me, either it was symmetric on both diagonals at once or it was just random clues.

Interesting.

Anyway, the puzzle has a single solution, but I had to use T&E to find it and eliminate all non-solutions.

I presume that someone will post one of those incredibly arcane solutions without T&E. But I had some nice easy SuDoku puzzles instead.

Started here:

Code: Select all
-6-  --2  -8-
5--  ---  -9-
---  1--  2--

--1  ---  ---
---  --4  7--
6--  -5-  ---

--7  -9-  3--
98-  ---  -64
---  ---  -1-

Got to here with simple logic:
Code: Select all
+-------------------+----------------------+--------------+
| 17     6      49  | 59      347    2     | 14   8  135  |
| 5      17     2   | 34678   34678  3678  | 146  9  136  |
| 348    349    489 | 1       46     59    | 2    7  56   |
+-------------------+----------------------+--------------+
| 23478  23479  1   | 236789  23678  36789 | 68   5  269  |
| 28     29     5   | 2689    1268   4     | 7    3  1269 |
| 6      2379   89  | 23789   5      13789 | 18   4  129  |
+-------------------+----------------------+--------------+
| 14     145    7   | 456     9      56    | 3    2  8    |
| 9      8      3   | 27      127    17    | 5    6  4    |
| 24     245    6   | 3458    348    358   | 9    1  7    |
+-------------------+----------------------+--------------+

Guessing r6c7=1 leads to a solution. 8 leads to invalid puzzle.
QED Puzzle has one solution.
