does anyone know the origins or meaning of the word "sudoku"

A friend told me it meant alone but i don't know if this is correct

it means something like "number placing" or "number puzzle" in japanese, i cant quite remember

The explanation I've heard most often is that "su" is "number" and "doku" means "sigle" or "bachelor", so it means somethign like 'singular number', i.e., each number only appears once in each row/column/box.
