The Independent Prize Puzzle 10th December, 2005

Postby MalcolmSm1th » Thu Dec 15, 2005 7:37 pm

I have got so far with this puzzle (see http://www.dragondrop.com/images/IndependentSuduko20051210a.jpg and I can't work out what on earth is next step.

I've fed this very grid into SudukoWorks and it comes up with the solution so this means that I do know that I am correct so far.

But the problem with this program it doesn't tell me how it gets from the half empty grid to the solution.

Can anyone help?

Malcolm,

from what I can see, there are some basic moves you can do.

* 9 and B can be placed in Column 7,
* 3 can be placed in Box 14
* 9 in Box 2
* 7 in box 6

Each time you add in a number, see if it unlocks anything else.

Is this puzzle a competition in the Independent Newspaper:?:

Here's the solution. Frankly, these puzzles are tedious rather than difficult to complete (unless you have a computer solver, in which case they are tedious rather than difficult to enter). Fiendish puzzles with X-Wings and the like on a standard grid are much more interesting.

Code: Select all
 9 . . . | . D E . | 2 . A . | . . . B
 3 . B C | 2 7 . . | E 5 . . | . 6 . 9
 A . . 0 | . 1 6 . | C . 3 B | . . E .
 F 5 8 E | A B 3 C | 9 4 6 0 | . . 7 1
---------+---------+---------+--------
 B . . A | . . F . | D 8 5 4 | 1 0 2 7
 . 8 3 D | E 5 . . | B 2 1 . | . . . .
 5 . . 1 | B A 4 2 | 7 9 0 3 | 8 . . .

Do you mean to day that this puzzle, that looks very complicated, can be reduced to just 11 hidden singles and 94 naked singles ???

Not sure if I'd want an X-wing on a 16, but pairs (both types) would be nice...
