Symmetry

Postby Bernard Stay » Mon May 23, 2005 3:56 pm

I wonder if Wayne or another on his behalf could please explain and illustrate what is meant by the admirable quality of the Poppacom puzzzles: that of symmetry. Is it symmetry of the grid numbers (clues) as shown? or symmetry of the completed grid, or what? I can't see what Wayne means by, for example "I note also that the "Easy" (Very Easy) puzzle shown at the bottom of the Richard & Judy website page is missing a 9 in r3c3, which is needed in order to make the puzzle symmetrical.". And an illustration of a grid which is not symmetrical would help.

Thanks.

I think it's symmetry in the placement of the clues, not the numbers that form the clues, nor the solution.

Also, it's often rotational symmetry through 180 degrees, though occasionally reflective symmetry.

Yes, thanks, Simes, I see it now. I think I've been looking at the wrong puzzles and the wrong aspects.
