I'm stuck with this one - can someone give me some help please

This is where I've got to:

*58|*3*|1**
7**|5**|89*
1**|*82|75*

58*|62*|917
*1*|*5*|*28
**7|**8|*3*

371|8*5|2*9
*95|27*|*81
8*2|*9*|*7*

Thanks v much (at least I managed todays SF without too much trouble!)

Make some eliminations based on where the candidate 3's are in column 3.
Find a pair in row 2 and make some eliminations.
Find a pair in column 6 and make some eliminations.
Make some eliminations based on where the candidate 6's are in row 2.
Fill a cell in box 1.

Please reply if you need a more specific hint.

If you read closely, I didn't say that eliminations need to be made in column 3, just that you need to look at where the candidate 3's are in column 3, and make eliminations based on what you see.

Specifically, look at where the candidate 3's are in box 4. Where does this let you eliminate candidate 3's in box 1?

Thank you scrose - I had in fact got there apart from the last stage - i.e. spotting the 6s in row 2 - and I see that now thanks to your hint.

You're not thick Kanfield - I can usually do fiendish ones without too much trouble but this one relies a lot on pretty subtle eliminating and spotting pairs.

You may think in box 1 that 3 can go in column 3 row 2 or row 3. But look at box 4. The only possible position for the 3 is in column 3 (either row 4 or 5) - therefore the 3 cannot go in column 3 in box 1. Simple really! (Hope I've got that right - I'm sure someone will shout if not). But you've still got quite a lot of work to do .....!

Need help with the 5's

Postby nickpowell77 » Wed Jul 06, 2005 7:49 pm

**8|*3*|1**
7**|***|89*
1**|*82|75*

58*|62*|917
*1*|*5*|*28
**7|**8|*3*

371|8*5|2*9
*95|27*|*81
8*2|*9*|*7*

I have got this far but cannot work out how to place 5's in rows 1 & 2 as in the grid above.

Help!

Cheers,
Nick

Make some eliminations based on where the candidate 3's are in boxes 1 and 4.
Find a pair in row 2 and make some eliminations.
You can now place a 5 in each of row 1 and 2.

Please reply if you need a more specific hint.

Hello!

Where can the original grid be found? I'm looking at the Times website but don't find it among the sudokusm for July 4th.

scrose and richarddsc - I appreciate the help on this so far but I am having a real blank on this one. I believe I have made the eliminations in column 3 and found the pair in row 2 but I don't seem to be left with a pair to eliminate in column 6. Further help would be even more appreciated!

Look at where candidates 7 and 9 are in column 6.

Just to add to the confusion... Starting with the grid as it was posted by richarddsc, there is a slightly faster alternative way to fill a cell.

Find a pair in column 6 and make some eliminations.
Make some eliminations based on where the candidate 6's are in row 2.
Find a pair in column 3 and make some eliminations.
Fill a cell in box 4.
