Hi
This puzzle is generated by HoDoKu.
It is "Extreme (3150)". :o
Code: Select all

I'm stuck here. :x
Code: Select all

| 6   4    8  | 9    1     3   | 25   25      7      |
'-------------'----------------'---------------------'

When I ask HoDoKu for a hint, it suggests using Uniqueness Test 4 to remove the 5's from r3c78. :?
I can read about Uniqueness Test 4 on the www, but it's not a method that I am comfortable with (yet).
Can somebody suggest an alternative move.
Not to solve the whole puzzle, just nudge it forward for me to work on. ;)

The type 4 UR is a good way to go, but ignoring that, here are 3 moves that will move you on:

Code: Select all
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 3       56      49       | 1       8       2        | 7       459     569      |

| 1       568     49       | 346     4569    7        | 245    d24589-3 3569     |

*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*

H2 Wing: (5=6) r4c9 - r4c4 = (6-3) r3c4 = (3) r3c9 => - 5 r3c9

*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 3      b56      49       | 1       8       2        | 7      a459    a569      |

| 6       4       8        | 9       1       3        | 25      25      7        |
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*

Grouped L3 Wing: (5) r1c89 = (5-6) r1c2 = (6-8) r3c2 = (8) r3c8 => - 5 r3c8

<Edit> I've replaced the three moves so that the first one (hopefully) starts from your exact PM position.

PS - Here's how the Type 4 UR works :

Code: Select all
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 3       56      49       | 1       8       2        | 7       459     569      |
| 58      7       2        | 346     4569    4569     | 456     134589  135689   |
| 1       568     49       | 346     4569    7        |*246-5  *23489-5 35689    |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 28      28      7        | 46      3       1        | 9       45      56       |
| 49      13      6        | 7       459     459      | 8       13      2        |
| 49      13      5        | 8       2       469      | 46      7       13       |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 27      29      1        | 5       67      68       | 3       89      4        |
| 57      59      3        | 2       47      48       | 1       6       89       |
| 6       4       8        | 9       1       3        |*25     *25      7        |
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*

Suppose r3c7 = 5. Since there are only two 2's in Row 3 r3c8 must be 2.

Combined with the 25s in r9c78 you get a Deadly pattern 25 in r39c78, so r3c7 <> 5.

A similar argument eliminates 5 from r3c8.

A similar argument eliminates 5 from r3c8.

The opposite diagonal cell cannot be the other candidate.That will be the rule of thumb.
i.e. if r9c7 is (23), then r3c8 <> 3
i.e. if r9c8 is (26), then r3c7 <> 6

XY Wing with Transport: (8=9) r7c8 - (9=2) r7c2 - (2=8) r4c2 - r4c1 = (8) r2c1 => = 8 r2c8;

:)
Thanks Leren, this I can understand...
(8=9) r7c8
[r7c8 is a bi-value square and contains one of the candidates 8 or 9]

If r7c8 is 8 then r2c8 is not 8.
If r7c8 is 9 then work through the chain a,b,c,d,e and r2c8 is not 8 again.
=> - 8 r2c8

I will look at the other moves later, and will study that Type 4 UR.
8-)

EDIT
I already have eliminated that 8 from r2c8.
Also already eliminated 8 from r3c9.
See my pencilmarks above.

H2 Wing: (3=1) r5c8 - r2c8 = (1-8) r2c9 = (8) r3c8 => - 3 r3c8

EDIT again.
This I can see now...
If r5c8 is 3 then r3c8 is not 3.
But if r6c9 is the 3 in that box instead then r2c9 must be the one in that column.
And there is only one other possible candidate for 8 in that box, it's r3c8.
So r3c8 is 8, it's not 3 again.
=> - 3 r3c8

So r3c8 is 8, it's not 3 again.

The way I'd describe this H2 wing is as follows:

1. If r5c8 is not 3 then follow the chain via cells abcd to conclude that r2c8 is 8. In particular r2c8 is not 3.

2. if r5c8 is 3 then obviously.............................................................................r2c8 is not 3.

Since r5c8 can only be 3 or not 3, then whatever value is in r5c8 then r2c8 is not 3. Thus r2c8 is not 3.

The H2 wing is an example of an AIC Type 2 (in Hodoku parlance). They have an excellent writeup on this topic (including worked examples) on their site as well as on Type 4 UR's.

H2 Wing: (5=6) r4c9 - r4c4 = (6-3) r3c4 = (3) r3c9 => - 5 r3c9

Got it. :)
(5=6) r4c9
[r4c9 is a bi-value square and contains one of the candidates 5 or 6]
If r4c9 is 5 then r3c9 is not 5.
If r4c9 is 6 then r4c4 is 6 and the only other 3 candidate on that row is r3c9, so it's not 5 again.
=> - 5 r3c9

From your current PM there is a hidden pair 13 in r25c8 which removes 49 from r2c8.

Code: Select all
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 3      c56      49       | 1       8       2        | 7      d459   db569      |
| 58      7       2        | 34      4569    569      | 456     13      13689-5  |
| 1       568     49       | 346     4569    7        | 245     2489    369      |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 28      28      7        | 46      3       1        | 9       45     a56       |
| 49      13      6        | 7       459     459      | 8       13      2        |
| 49      13      5        | 8       2       469      | 46      7       13       |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 27      29      1        | 5       67      68       | 3       89      4        |
| 57      59      3        | 2       47      48       | 1       6       89       |
| 6       4       8        | 9       1       3        | 25      25      7        |
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
M Wing : (5=6) r3c9 - r1c9 = (6-5) r1c2 = (5) r1c89 => - 5 r2c9

Code: Select all
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 3       56      49       | 1       8       2        | 7       459     569      |
|a58      7       2        | 34      4569    569      | 46-5    13     b13689    |
| 1       568     49       | 346     4569    7        | 245    c2489    369      |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 28      28      7        | 46      3       1        | 9       45      56       |
| 49      13      6        | 7       459     459      | 8       13      2        |
| 49      13      5        | 8       2       469      | 46      7       13       |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 27      29      1        | 5       67      68       | 3       89      4        |
| 57      59      3        | 2       47      48       | 1       6       89       |
| 6       4       8        | 9       1       3        |e25     d25      7        |
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
(5=8) r2c1 - r2c9 = (8-2) r3c8 = (2-5) r9c8 = (5) r9c7 => - 5 r2c7

There is thus a naked pair 46 r26c7 which removes the 4 from r3c7. Note that this exposes an obvious Type 1 UR (25) r39c78 that would remove 2 from r3c8 but I won't use that.

Code: Select all
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 3       56      49       | 1       8       2        | 7       459     569      |
| 58      7       2        | 3-4     4569    569      |a46      13      13689    |
| 1       568     49       | 346     4569    7        | 25      2489    369      |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 28      28      7        |d46      3       1        | 9      c45      56       |
| 49      13      6        | 7       459     459      | 8       13      2        |
| 49      13      5        | 8       2       469      |b46      7       13       |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 27      29      1        | 5       67      68       | 3       89      4        |
| 57      59      3        | 2       47      48       | 1       6       89       |
| 6       4       8        | 9       1       3        | 25      25      7        |
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
Two Stringed Kite : (4) r2c7 = r6c7 - r4c8 = r4c4 => - 4 r2c4

This solves r2c4 = 3 and consequently several other cells which should bring you to here:

Code: Select all
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 3       56      49       | 1       8       2        | 7       459     569      |
| 58      7       2        | 3       4569    569      | 46      1       689      |
| 1       568     49       | 46      4569    7        | 25      2489    3        |
|--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------|
| 28      28      7        | 46      3       1        | 9       45      56       |

| 6       4       8        | 9       1       3        | 25      25      7        |
*--------------------------------------------------------------------------------*

Look for a Swordfish in 4's that removes the 4 in r3c5.

(8=2) r3c8 - (2=5) r3c7 - r1c89 = r1c2 - (5=8) r2c1 => - 8 r2c9, r3c2

The puzzle solves easily from here with singles and one pointing pair. Puzzle solved - no guesses - no URs.

I'm not accepting this.
:evil:

Using this...
Code: Select all
.-------------.----------------.-----------------.
| 3  56  f49 | 1   8    2   | 7    e459 g569     |
| 58 7   2   | 34  4569 569 | c456 1349 x13689-5 |

:------------+--------------+---------------------:
| 28 28  7   | 46  3    1   | 9    d45  a56      |
| 49 13  6   | 7   459  459 | 8    13   2        |
| 49 13  5   | 8   2    469 | b46  7    13       |
:------------+--------------+-------------------:

| 6  4   8   | 9   1    3   | 25   25   7        |
'------------'--------------'--------------------'

If r4c9 is not 6 then r2c9 is not 5.
If r6c7 is not 6 then several things happen.
r2c7 becomes 56.
r4c8 becomes 5 and r1c8 becomes 49.
This 49 pairs with the 49 in r1c3 to remove the 9 from r1c9 making it another 56.
The two 56's lock and r2c9 is not 5 again.
=> - 5 r2c9.

Your latest PM corresponds to the one I used for the move following the M Wing, so that's the next suggested move.

The M Wing was a Type 3B. For a discussion of M Wings refer to the following : http://forum.enjoysudoku.com/m-wings-m-rings-exemplars-examples-t30030.html

If I were to describe the M Wing in words (instead of AC notation) I would say something like this :

Suppose r4c9 was not 5. Then it must be 6. So r1c9 is not 6. Since there are only 2 6's in Row 1 then r1c2 must be 6. So it is not 5.

Since there are only 3 5's in Row 1 either r1c8 is 5 or r1c9 is 5.

You can run this argument in reverse by supposing that neither of r1c89 is 5 and you would conclude that r4c9 must be 5.

So you can conclude that at least 1 of r1c89 and r4c9 must be 5 (in fact r1c9 turns out to be 5). Since r2c9 can see all of these 3 cells it can't be 5 QED.

Got it.
You forced r1c2 to be 6 to make sure that the 5 in row 1 is in box 3.

Now I can see your original problem : the AIC notation should have been M Wing : (5=6) r3c9 - r1c9 = (6-5) r1c2 = (5) r1c89 => - 5 r2c9

I had a dyslexic moment and had my rows and columns mixed up in the underlined part of the AIC notation - sorry for the confusion. I've fixed the notation in the post.
