Any advice on the computer programmes available on sudoku or any good websites where you can do them for free:?:

In reponse to both your threads (might be better to include multiple questions in one, in future - we really do get some quite humungous posts here, no prizes for brevity):

1. I haven't tried sudoku with anything other than numbers, though I'd imagine using anything else would simply be a matter of familiarity, e.g. letters A to I would probably not be too hard for me to get used to, though a random selection of football club badges certainly would be. Let's face it, it's all just about finding the missing squiggle.

2. I find the program you can download from this website to be very good, though you'll have to buy it after 28 days. Still, $14.95 only works out at about 8 quid, so let's not moan too much eh? Must admit that's about the limit of my program knowledge, so I'd suggest you search through a few threads for any URLs that stand out.

Here are a few free sites that I look at from time-to-time.
  • Daily SuDoku, as the name suggests, has a puzzle-of-the-day.
  • Web Sudoku has a large set puzzles to choose from.
  • Sudoku Fun has a new puzzle every few minutes, depending on how quickly people solve the current one.
Many newspapers have a list of recent puzzles they have published.

Yikes! This one is TERRIBLE! Forget that their puzzles have no symmetry, the easy ones have over 40 clues, they take to long to generate and the interface is useless -- most of their puzzles HAVE MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS! Here's a 'crazy' level puzzle I just generated there:

Code: Select all
..6...2..
...2.....
.........
........8
7...2....
.........
.6....4..
.........
...4.....

That's right -- there are only 9 clues!

Here's a medium one:

Code: Select all
1.......2
.29.6.458
4........
........6
598...7..
.7.9..24.
71...6.9.
...59..67
.65.....1

Too many clues, no symmetry and MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS!

These guys didn't even bother taking five minutes to find out what a Sudoku was before spitting out this ridiculous program.

I'd be afraid to try their other software.

AVOID THIS SITE.
