Stuck with this

Postby Estam » Mon Dec 03, 2012 11:39 pm

Hi all, I am really new to this and have read lots but some explanation am finding hard to follow. Our local paper has a puzzle each day with the hardest on Sunday. I haven't had too many problems solving even the Sunday 5 star but every now, like many get stuck. I hope this is ok to post this but this is a puzzle from few weeks ago this I would appreciate little help. In this I asked for a hint and can't figure the hint. Many thanks ....Dave

I find it very difficult to read the digits in those pictures. Does the first image show:
Code: Select all
4 . . | . . . | . . 3
. 1 3 | 7 2 5 | 8 . 4
. . . | . 4 . | . . .
------+-------+------
. 3 . | 5 . 8 | . 4 .
. 4 7 | . . . | 5 . .
. 6 . | 2 . 4 | . 1 .
------+-------+------
. . . | . 5 7 | . . .
. . 9 | 4 6 1 | 2 . .
7 . . | . . 2 | . . 5

Jason, your copy of the puzzle should show r4c2 = 9, not 3.

A Hint for Estam is that in Row 9 only 3 different numbers can go into Columns 2, 4 and 5 (that's called a Naked Triple in Sudoku-Speak). This should enable you to place a number in Row 9 Column 8.

A hidden pair (1,4) in row 9 will do the same.
Those who can see a naked subset before a hidden one,
Most likely you are a pencil marker or going through a solver.
