Stuck with supposedly easy puzzle

Postby deetee » Tue Mar 07, 2006 3:55 pm

Hi there,

I have been doing Sudoku a few months now but I came across this one in a puzzle book which has got me stumped. I've tried all logical trickery I can think of but I'm probably only an "experienced" beginner. Believe it or not this was in the Easy section, but I've finished Medium level puzzles in the same book with relative ease !!

Here it is as published...
Code: Select all
. . 6 | . . 1 | 2 8 5
. . . | . 4 7 | . . .
9 . . | . . 2 | . . .
------+-------+------
1 . . | . . . | . 3 .
2 . . | 1 7 4 | . . 9
4 . . | . . . | . . 7
------+-------+------
. . . | . . . | . . 1
. . . | . 8 5 | . . 6
. . 5 | 9 . . | . . .

And here it is with my pencilmarks...
Code: Select all
7      4      6     | 3      9      1     | 2      8      5
5      128    128   | 68     4      7     | 169    169    3
9      138    138   | 568    56     2     | 167    167    4
--------------------+---------------------+--------------------
1      56789  789   | 256    56     89    | 4      3      28
2      3568   38    | 1      7      4     | 568    56     9
4      56     89    | 256    3      89    | 156    1256   7
--------------------+---------------------+--------------------
68     79     479   | 47     2      36    | 35789  579    1
3      1279   12479 | 47     8      5     | 79     279    6
68     27     5     | 9      1      36    | 378    4      28

I'm looking for a next step, and hopefully to learn a new technique in the process !

Thanks in advance.

I don't know how far this will take you, but the 7 must go in R4C3 due to uniqueness of 89 at R4C6, R6C3, R6C6. Sorry I had it wrong before, my brain isn't working yet today.

Apparently this puzzle has 27 solutions so you could guess or give up. Uniqueness prinicple can't apply because it's not unique!

deetee, i suggest, you should add this book to the sticky "sudokus of shame" in the General/puzzle section.

A hard 'easy' puzzle

I think that the puzzle has been badly set (misprint?). My solver found 27 solutions for it, so there is not a unique solution, and so one has to make guesses which may lead to a solution Bill Chambers
