It doesn't appear that anybody had answered your post with the valid grid and I'm not sure that you even asked the question. but the puzzle solves with only hidden and naked singles.

Not really -- no more than for finding forcing chains. I don't even have a user friendly method that finds all singles!

After a little looking around I tried r8c2=2 (above). It looked promising because there were so many candidates that it would exclude. It did not work, but it was clear from the result that r7c2=2 would (below -- working clockwise from r7c2).

So r7c2 cannot be 8 -- there's only one candidate left that can go there, so r7c2=4.


Many solvers classify Nishio beyond coloring and forcing chains, but Nishio can often be used before you've penciled in a any candidates, especially when the puzzle is 2/3 filled. Nishio might be required, or there might be naked pairs left to find -- even singles -- but my goal isn't to use the tactics in some arbitrary complexity order. The *feel* of finding a Nishio without pencil marks is similar to the feel of the crosshatching.

Nishio is sometimes coloring in reverse, starting with the exclusion. If it seems obvious to you where to start, then Nishio might be faster.

I could make a Nishio elimination in 5s, starting with r7c3 (above -- working clockwise from r7c3).
But if I had pencil marks, it would probably be easier to use coloring to find the same exclusion (below).
