I have a pair (18) in block 3 cols 8 and 9 but without guessing cannot work out which goes where.

Where should I be looking?

Take a really good look at box 4.

Thanks, but I still don't 'see' it.

Is this to do with pairs or triples as there are multiple candidates for each cell, or am I missing something much more basic?

My mistake... I seem to have left some words out of my post...

You have two options:
a) take a good look at box 8
b) take a good look at number 4
