stuck on Fiendish grid

Postby Leet » Sat Dec 31, 2005 10:52 pm

When Judy and I worked this grid we both arrived independently at the following configuration but cannot break though it. This is a Fiendish from Grand Master.

Code: Select all

7  9   1 | 8  6  - | 4   -  5
4  -  -  | 1  -  5 | -  9  -
-  2  -  | 9  4  - | -  -  1
----------------------------
-  -  7  | 2  1  9  | 3  -  -
1  4  3  |  6  -  - | 9  5  2
2  -  9  |  5 3  4  | -  -  -
----------------------------
9  -  -  | 7  -  1  | -  6  -
-  7  -  | 3  -  -  | -  -  9
-  1  2  | 4  9  6  | -  -  7

What is the logic for the next step:?:

can't see what candidates you've excluded, so here's the list straight from your puzzle.
Code: Select all
 *-----------------------------------------------------------*
 | 7     9     1     | 8     6     23    | 4     23    5     |
 | 4     368   68    | 1     27    5     | 2678  9     368   |
 | 3568  2     568   | 9     4     37    | 678   378   1     |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 568   568   7     | 2     1     9     | 3     48    468   |
 | 1     4     3     | 6     78    78    | 9     5     2     |
 | 2     68    9     | 5     3     4     | 1678  178   68    |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 9     358   458   | 7     258   1     | 258   6     348   |
 | 568   7     4568  | 3     258   28    | 1258  1248  9     |
 | 358   1     2     | 4     9     6     | 58    38    7     |
 *-----------------------------------------------------------*

for explanation of terms, go here and here

You have an XWing on 2s and can eliminate two of them from row 8
A hidden pair (2,7) in row 2 and can eliminate other numbers from those cells
A naked pair (6,8) in row 6 and can eliminate those numbers from other cells in that row
A hidden single (6) in column 7
Locked Candidates (8) in column 7
Now you should have your next placement.
