Stuck again

Postby pmsmith » Tue Dec 18, 2007 11:36 pm

Hi,
I am newbee so sorry about the loss in formatting. I'm using firefox/unix for my browser and cut and pasted member Wychwood's post of Nov 14 10:10 am. I can't force the format to be fixed width. Any suggestions on how to do this? (added code tags - Ruud)

Code: Select all
 *--------------------------------------------------*
 | 49   6    49   | 7    8    2    | 3    1    5    |
 | 15   2    58   | 16   9    3    | 7    68   4    |
 | 13   7    38   | 5    16   4    | 29   68   29   |
 |----------------+----------------+----------------|
 | 34   5    346  | 9    2    168  | 148  7    138  |
 | 8    1    2    | 4    3    7    | 5    9    6    |
 | 7    9    346  | 168  5    168  | 148  2    138  |
 |----------------+----------------+----------------|
 | 2    4    7    | 3    16   9    | 168  5    18   |
 | 6    3    59   | 128  7    158  | 129  4    29   |
 | 59   8    1    | 26   4    56   | 269  3    7    |
 *--------------------------------------------------*

But anyway, I got to this point myself but have r8c9 as 129 and not 29. Am i missing a move to force the last reduction or was it a typo? Apart from this i agree with all other cells of Mr/Ms Wychwood's post.

So it would appear that to solve this puzzle we had to use
(1) Some basic reductions
(2) ALS-XY
(3) More basic reductions
(3) XY chain or UR type 1
(4) More basic reductions to complete the solution of the puzzle

All in all a very useful learning experience.

I have written my own s/w to do most of this using the IDL graphics package. Do most of you use some other commercially available package?
