struck with No 586 of the Times (fiendish)

Postby nab » Sun Jan 29, 2006 7:27 pm

Hi all,

with the last three fiendish sudokus at The Times I was only with guessing able to solve:

Code: Select all
(28  )  6      4     | (13  ) (37  ) (127 ) |  5     (18  )  9
(2359)  1     (357 ) |  6      8     (29  ) | (27  )  4     (37  )
(2389) (2789) (378 ) |  4      5     (129 ) | (278 ) (168 ) (1367)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(89  ) (89  )  2     |  7      1      3     |  4     (56  ) (56  )
 7      4      1     |  2      6      5     |  3      9      8
(356 ) (53  ) (356 ) |  9      4      8     |  1      7      2
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(1235) (27  ) (357 ) | (135 )  9      6     | (78  ) (158 )  4
(1568) (78  ) (5678) | (15  )  2      4     |  9      3     (157)
 4     (53  )  9     |  8     (37  ) (17  ) |  6      2     (15  )

I do know through guessing that the solution is:

Code: Select all
264 137 589
915 682 743
278 459 261

892 713 456
741 265 398
653 948 172

527 396 814
186 524 937
439 871 625

But without guessing I'm at a loss ;-)
What's the next step?

TIA,
Niko

Simple Sudoku says this puzzle has two solutions, so guessing is necessary as logic will not and cannot solve it. Assuming you entered it into a computer program, is it possible a clue was either left out or entered in the wrong cell?

somewhere you have got the top row of box 5 wrong, the 1 and 7 need to swap places.:D

The original puzzle is:

Code: Select all
 *-----------*
 |.6.|..1|5.9|
 |.1.|.8.|...|
 |...|4..|...|
 |---+---+---|
 |..2|.73|...|
 |7..|2.5|..8|
 |...|94.|1..|
 |---+---+---|
 |...|..6|...|
 |...|.2.|.3.|
 |4.9|8..|.2.|
 *-----------*

{238}    {6}      {3478}   {37}     {3}      {1}      {5}      {478}    {9}
{2359}   {1}      {3457}   {3567}   {8}      {279}    {23467}  {467}    {23467}
{23589}  {235789} {3578}   {4}      {3569}   {279}    {23678}  {1678}   {12367}
{15689}  {4589}   {2}      {16}     {7}      {3}      {469}    {4569}   {456}
{7}      {349}    {1346}   {2}      {16}     {5}      {3469}   {469}    {8}
{3568}   {358}    {3568}   {9}      {4}      {8}      {1}      {567}    {23567}
{12358}  {23578}  {13578}  {1357}   {1359}   {6}      {4789}   {145789} {1457}
{1568}   {578}    {15678}  {157}    {2}      {479}    {46789}  {3}      {14567}
{4}      {357}    {9}      {8}      {135}    {7}      {67}     {2}      {1567}

Singles, pairs and locked candidates are all that's required. Though there's also an x-wing on 2s that helps, but it's not essential to solving the puzzle.:)
