Thanks, I thought I was losing my mind. I did quadruple-check the book that I got this out of and the solution in the back of the book is NOT unique. It has r2c1=2, r3c1=8, r2c9=8, r3c9=2.

Maybe it would be easier if you chose a puzzle with a unique solution.

Simple Sudoku says above has too many solutions to count.

It looks like it needs one placement each in boxes 1 and 7 to form a symmetrical puzzle. I wonder if that's the problem?
