Simple Sudoku: bug/feature?

Postby roger888 » Mon Jun 27, 2005 2:53 pm

I've just downloaded and installed angusj's ver 2.1n, replacing 2.1i. I noticed -- when my finger inadvertently hit the wrong num key to enter a big number -- that the programme was preventing entry of any but correct answers. I though this was odd, and didn't remember this bug/feature before. I uninstalled, reinstalled ver 2.1i and confirmed that it didn't have this feature. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled ver 2.1n, and failed to reproduce the same behaviour. But now it prevents entry of a different number when there is only one candidate -- even if it's a wrong one.

Puzzled.

Incidentally, angusj, simes, scrose and others: hats off to you all. I was an early addict, and bought Wayne's programme back before Christmas. After a couple of months immersion, I took a break. And now I discover there's a whole community analysing, developing, classifying the same sort of techniques much more elegantly than I ever did. Excellent.

Well the intended behaviour is to allow you to enter illegal values up to the point that any cell is left without candidates. At that point Simple Sudoku should highlight that cell so you're aware there's a problem. Then, you should undo back to a point where you hope there are no errors:) .

Thanks and yes, it's a lot of fun.

Understood. I think I've actually misunderstood a more general feature: the programme prevents you entering any value in a cell which is not a current candidate value. I presume this is by design.

Yes. Where the candidates are always visible, I thought it would be a sensible safety net. Either you're about to make a typo, or you previously scrubbed out valid candidate(s) so you're better off undoing.
