Others may well already do this, in which case the standard apologies to them for "teaching Granny how to suck eggs" but for those who don't, there is a simple way of remembering where you were, if you are solving a Pappocom on your computer and you have stopped for "a breather" or for some other reason.

Save the puzzle as eg "VHquad" if you are working on a Very Hard and have reached the stage in you hierarchy of solving steps where looking for quads is the next move. Then delete the file bearing the title you had previously saved the puzzle under.
