Request for an Advanced Techniques Guide

Postby tyrion » Wed Dec 28, 2005 7:12 pm

Hello all! I know that's quite something i ask for. I know. But wouldn't it be nice if we had a list of those advanced techniques i hear about, BUG, uniqueness, almost limited sets, jellyfish, and others i don't remember, each name with a link to its explanation?
I already know about sadman sudoku and simple sudoku's lists of techniques, the ones i'm talking about here are the ones they don't mention.
Well, i just thought it would be a nice thing. Any effort in that way would be greatly appreciated, and i'm sure not only by me. See you!

Advanced strats

Postby AndrewStuart » Wed Dec 28, 2005 7:41 pm

I'm compiling a guide here:
http://www.scanraid.com/AdvanStrategies.htm
All these work on the on-line solver at
http://www.scanraid.com/sudoku.htm

I've a couple more strats still to document which will be up soon.

Some terminology references are shown here.

I also took a look at the explanations on the site, and found it hard to follow the terminology - it'd be easier to follow if they were called by the same names as used in this forum, and in the Angus J and SadMan Sudoku guides. No sense adding to the existing confusion of learning a new technique by calling it something different.

You also have a few typos (sorry, I'm a bit of a stickler for that - if you're making something that's to be available to the public, the spelling should be correct).

Hello for the first time. I would like to see a directory too, one that starts from the most basic of the techniques and works up through the hierarchy of difficulty to the most "complex" and is regularly updated. It would be so much appreciated by "ordinary" solvers like me who want to become more expert. One single author or a group, brave enough to take up the task, from amongst the real superbrains who submit the technical posts here would be the best way.

Bifurcation, BUG, turbot fish, nice loops, wings other than X and XY, et al, they all leave me wishing I knew what they really were and very keen to absorb and then use them for the truly testing puzzles, if I should need to. If each could have a full but minimal explanation we, the mass of "normal" solvers, would be hugely grateful. I've tried searching through these forums but it is a task and a half and the information is very fragmented and often presented in an intimidating way.

Wouldn't it be so wonderful if we eventually reached a point where our "pattern identification" was so comprehensive and powerful that every conceivable sudoku could be solved without T & E (bifurcation?). Truly, the sudoku Holy Grail!

I want to thank Andrew Stuart for sharing with the rest of us newbies at Sudoku his theories about how to tackle solving these most addictive puzzles.
