Puzzle 85 From Book 1

Postby lunababy_moonchild » Mon May 09, 2005 9:45 am

I am totally stuck with Fiendish puzzle 85 from the book. I've gotten this far:

8 1 9 ¦ 2 6 3 ¦ 5 4 7
7 5 6¦4 8 * ¦ 3 * *
2 4 3 ¦ 5 7 * ¦ * * *
3 * 1 ¦ * * * ¦ * * *
* 2 4 ¦ 1 * 7 ¦ * 8 *
* * * ¦* * *¦ * * 1
* * * ¦ * * 4 ¦ 1 5 *
4 * 5 ¦ * 1 * ¦ * * 6
1 * 2¦ * 5 6 ¦ 7 9 4

*blue numbers are mine*

I'd appreciate a little hint.

Thanks

You will see a move if you combine your knowledge of row 8 with the knowledge of box 2

And next time it might be better to post your question in 'Times Sudoku Book 1'... (or is it a different book?)

It's the Pappocom Book, I should have made that clear.

Thanks for the tip.

Hmm, then I'll explain it some more:

possibilities for row8:

r8c2: 3, 7, 8, 9
r8c4: 3, 7, 8, 9
r8c6: 2, 8, 9
r8c7: 2, 8
r8c8: 2, 3

Now take a look at box 2: the only place where it can have a 9 is in column 6. this means we can remove 9 as candidate from r8c6, leaving 2, 8

Which means you can remove 2 and 8 from all other cells (except for r8c6 and r8c7 ofcourse).
Or look where 7 and 9 can occur: only in r8c2 and r8c4, this leaves only one valid place for the 3...
