Please help with "diabolical" puzzle

Postby VegHeadMoby » Sun Jul 10, 2005 5:39 pm

I am having trouble solving this puzzle with logic....
Here is the original code...

8.3|.29|..6
..6|.18|5..
...|...|...
-----------
..5|.4.|.8.
7.9|...|6.2
.6.|.9.|1..
-----------
...|...|...
..1|65.|8..
5..|98.|4.3

And here is where I am stuck...

8.3|.29|716
..6|.18|5.4
...|.6.|..8
-----------
..5|.46|.8.
7.9|.35|642
.6.|.9.|1.5
-----------
6..|.7.|.51
..1|65.|8..
5..|981|463

Thanks for the help!

I can't solve it with logic either - are you confident it doesn't require a little T&E?

Where did it come from?

This puzzle definitely does require trial and error, however it has a unique solution.

See where 7 can be in row 4. See what happens to (2,4) when you put 7 in either place in row 4.

I got it from the site www.sudoku.org.uk - no guarantee that it doesn't require trial and error but I assumed (probably a bad idea) that a site dedicated to sudoku and full of regular players and the like wouldn't publish puzzles that required T&E...

Anyway, thanks for the help:)

Some of the puzzles from that site require T&E, or "bifurcation" as the author would prefer.
