---recall that the premature close was due to a referee bug that
terminated the referee on any forum login failure (the referee must
login to make a post)

not so!

there were 2 separate issues in your absence

first, game 41 ended very quickly -- due to absence of players !
( only one active player, i arrived too late )

secondly, about 1 day after the game ended,
the forum became unavailable for approximately 2 days,
preventing the launch of game 42

if this 2nd problem hadn't happened,
you might've come back to find that 5 more games had started and ended without players

right, the referee exiting due to login failure would have prevented it from posting the close message(s) -- doh
anyway, both of the issues have been addressed in the current referee

I have to be in a special state of mind to get time zone details right
when all clocks in question are set to the correct local time
the forum clock is not set correctly

g.r.emlin's local time (USA EDT) at the open post was
2008-07-18+16:04:00-0400
the -0400 is USA EDT offset from zulu/GMT, or
2008-07-18+20:04:00-0000 zulu/GMT time
the referee wakeup cycle is 5 min so it may be up to 5 min off
this is near the time when the forum claimed it was
2008-07-18+18:52:00-0000

the announcement was for 20:00 zulu and actual post was 20:04 zulu (within the 5 min cycle)

here's another example using times from my previous post

so the forum clock is 1 hour 20 min slow

moral: ignore the forum times
