OT: Times Crossword 24 October

Postby petef » Mon Oct 24, 2005 8:27 am

The copies of the paper round here have an advert printed over the bottom of the crossword. Can anyone provide the clues for 28 across and 24 down?

I suppose that I should have noticed that the whole bottom line of the puzzle was mising. As it was, I just thought that the clues did not all match the puzzle.
An annoying way to start the week though.

I've received this from The Times:

28 ACROSS: Crew's leader is indebted to yachting centre (5)

24 DOWN: Ordinary iron vessel (4)

The missing bottom line across the grid contains 15 squares - from left
to right there are 9 white spaces ( to contain the answer to 27 across),
one black space and then 5 white spaces, to contain the answer to 28
across.

Once again please accept our apologies for the mistake and the
disruption it has caused to your enjoyment.

Thank you for that info, pete. I thought 28 across must be COWES!

By the by, there's an interesting piece of software at www.crosswordmaestro.com which purports to be a cryptic crossword solver. I tried it on a recent Times crossword, and while it certainly didn't get anywhere near solving it, it did get more than one clue right, which I thought was pretty impressive for a computer program.

Back on topic, I've yet to receive a reply from The Times to my complaint about the first Samurai from the Sudoku Supplement - 22 October. Maybe a few more independent queries might help.
