Leren wrote:Hi Steve,
By general consensus, the aim of these Dan's Dailies threads is to find a single "advanced" move that will solve the puzzle. The move can be preceded by "basics", where these are defined as singles, intersect/reject, naked or hidden pairs triples and quads. For some reason basic fish are not included in basics. Finned, franken, mutant etc fish would count as the advanced move. The advanced move can be followed by more basics to complete the puzzle but would preferably be followed singles only. The advanced move will generally be some sort of AIC with 3 - 5 Strong links, an ALS XZ or ALS XY Wing. Some solvers like to use uniqueness or avoidable patterns to create one of the Strong links.

Unfinned XWings, Swordfish and Jellyfish would be excluded from basics. I'm not sure what the reasoning is - perhaps it produces a wider ''Goldilocks" zone of puzzles that can be solved by a single advanced move but aren't considered too easy for experienced solvers. Maybe the experts with more knowledge of the history of this forum can comment.

SSTS means Simple Sudoku Technique Set, the set of solving techniques implemented in the Simple Sudoku program.
Because this set has not changed since 2005, it is often used as a benchmark. Some solvers use SSTS in their solving path description to identify the "easy" parts not worth mentioning between the advanced steps.
The set contains the following techniques -- listed by SS hierarchy:
Naked Single, Hidden Single, Naked Pair, Locked Candidates, Naked Triple, Naked Quad, Hidden Pair, X-Wing, Swordfish, Simple Colors, Multi-Colors, Hidden Triple, XY-Wing, Hidden Quad.
