yeah, you both miss the x-wing on R68C47
or ER/ 2-string kite...

as far as i know the er 2string kites don't function in ss, but the x wing sure will.

a ?? if the next finned x-wing is in ss or not as i don't recall.
then a xy-wing

which puts me at the grid you seen above and my solution.

Yes, there are differences of opinion on whether or not x-wings should be considered "basic" moves. For the purpose of these daily puzzles, we generally agree not to consider them basics.

Ah, we'll for the longest time most off us that solved stuff on the forum used a standard reference point. That standard was simple sudoku as the guide set for what was basic.. However if you have agreed to a different set list pls point to it

This what I was told when I first came here:

Leren wrote:Hi Steve,

By general consensus, the aim of these Dan's Dailies threads is to find a single "advanced" move that will solve the puzzle. The move can be preceded by "basics", where these are defined as singles, intersect/reject, naked or hidden pairs triples and quads. For some reason basic fish are not included in basics. Finned, franken, mutant etc fish would count as the advanced move. The advanced move can be followed by more basics to complete the puzzle but would preferably be followed singles only. The advanced move will generally be some sort of AIC with 3 - 5 Strong links, an ALS XZ or ALS XY Wing. Some solvers like to use uniqueness or avoidable patterns to create one of the Strong links.

Unfinned XWings, Swordfish and Jellyfish would be excluded from basics. I'm not sure what the reasoning is - perhaps it produces a wider ''Goldilocks" zone of puzzles that can be solved by a single advanced move but aren't considered too easy for experienced solvers. Maybe the experts with more knowledge of the history of this forum can comment.

I consider "basics" as locked cells and sets only.

The previous standard that I think StrmCkr is referring to is SSTS - Simple Sudoku Techique Set. This is defined at the Sudopedia mirror site as :

SSTS means Simple Sudoku Technique Set, the set of solving techniques implemented in the Simple Sudoku program.

Because this set has not changed since 2005, it is often used as a benchmark. Some solvers use SSTS in their solving path description to identify the "easy" parts not worth mentioning between the advanced steps.

The set contains the following techniques -- listed by SS hierarchy:

Naked Single, Hidden Single, Naked Pair, Locked Candidates, Naked Triple, Naked Quad, Hidden Pair, X-Wing, Swordfish, Simple Colors, Multi-Colors, Hidden Triple, XY-Wing, Hidden Quad.

This list is what we currently refer to as basics plus X-Wing, Swordfish, Simple Colors, Multi-Colors and XY Wing.

If you use SSTS then todays puzzle would be completely solvable, using basics + 1 X Wing on 7 + Simple coloring on 5.

In other words, using SSTS as a basic set of moves there would be no "advanced" move required to solve the puzzle !!!!!! ie nobody would respond because there would be nothing to respond to.

If you wanted to revert to SSTS as a basic set of moves then Dan would have to raise the rating of the daily puzzles.
