Need some help on this one

Postby JFistere » Fri May 26, 2006 5:33 am

I'm stuck on this puzzle, which is #155 in The Big Book of Sudoku, Mark Huckvale, Newmarket Press. It's in their toughest category, Challenging.

Where I'm stuck:

7 23 4 | 1 8 23 | 5 9 6
68 36 89 | 5 4 7 | 2 38 1
258 1235 189 | 39 29 6 | 7 38 4
------------------+--------------------+-------------------
25 125 3 | 8 6 125 | 4 127 9
9 1256 17 | 4 27 1235 | 36 127 8
826 4 817 | 39 279 123 | 36 5 27
------------------+--------------------+-------------------
4 9 2 | 7 3 8 | 1 6 5
1 7 6 | 2 5 9 | 8 4 3
3 8 5 | 6 1 4 | 9 27 27

Original puzzle:

7 | 1 | 9
| 5 4 7 | 2 1
| 6 | 7 4
------------------+--------------------+-------------------
3 | 8 6 |
9 | | 8
4 | | 5
------------------+--------------------+-------------------
4 2 | 7 3 | 1 6 5
1 6 | 2 5 | 3
8 | 6 |

I've been stuck for a few days now, so I would appreciate your help.

(The grid looked OK in my text editor, with all the required spaces. I hope it is actually OK.)

Thanks,

Hi

This is all singles. Start with hidden singles on rows 2 & 4.

The grid might look OK on text editor but it needs to line up on the Preview screen - click Preview before you submit and adjust the spacing.

If you click 'quote' on my reply you'll see how your grid actually looked on the posting screen.

Code: Select all
*-----------------------------------------------------------*
 | 7     23    4     | 1     8     23    | 5     9     6     |
 | 68    36    89    | 5     4     7     | 2     38    1     |
 | 258   1235  189   | 39    29    6     | 7     38    4     |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 25    125   3     | 8     6     125   | 4     127   9     |
 | 9     1256  17    | 4     27    1235  | 36    1237  8     |
 | 268   4     178   | 39    279   123   | 36    5     27    |
 |-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
 | 4     9     2     | 7     3     8     | 1     6     5     |
 | 1     7     6     | 2     5     9     | 8     4     3     |
 | 3     8     5     | 6     1     4     | 9     27    27    |

Why don't you download Simple Sudoku and let it do the donkey work for you?

                  |              6     | 7            4
------------------+--------------------+-------------------
             3    | 8     6            |
9                 |                    |              8
      4           |                    |       5
------------------+--------------------+-------------------
4            2    | 7     3            | 1     6      5
1            6    | 2     5            |              3
      8           | 6                  |

Thanks for a pointer to the next number.

Emm,
Thank you for such a fast reponse, and my puzzle wasn't even posted right.

What do you mean, "hidden" singles? The answer was so obvious I can't believe I missed them!:)

(I do know what you mean.)

Thanks,
John
