harvdog You could make some progress but as this puzzle has no solutions as posted it would not be worthwhile. Is there a typo in the grid?

This puzzle came from last Saturday's Boston Globe (7/12/08). I see now that it was my mistake. I will correct it and try to finish it. Thank You for your time.

Having no idea what the original Boston Globe puzzle is, from your state I removed all unsymmetrical clues, and then removed the 9s from r1c4 & r9c6:

Code: Select all
....5.4..
4..31.67.
.6.2.....
..3..1.67
..5.8.1..
91.4..5..
.....4.5.
.34.25..1
..2.3....

This puzzle has a unique solution and is solvable by singles/pairs.

In the future please post the original puzzle as well if you don't want to waste the time of other people.

nice, udosuk, and we can drop 2 more clues ( retaining symmetry ) -- 27 clues, solved with "hidden" duos --
Code: Select all
 . . . | . . . | 4 . .
 4 . . | 3 1 . | 6 7 .
 . 6 . | 2 . . | . . .
-------+-------+------
 . . 3 | . . 1 | . 6 7
 . . 5 | . 8 . | 1 . .
 9 1 . | 4 . . | 5 . .
-------+-------+------
 . . . | . . 4 | . 5 .
 . 3 4 | . 2 5 | . . 1
 . . 2 | . . . | . . .

You are spot on udosuk it matches the grid on the Boston Globe site perfectly. Ranked as 5* so reasonable for a newspaper offering.

If you care:) ...

Boston Globe, USA Today, Seattle Times, LA Times, MSNBC, Newsweek and many others all use UClick as their puzzle source. For the lower-budget papers (Seattle Times, Sacremento Bee, Boston Globe...) they all get the same puzzles. Others get better/harder puzzles (LA Times has the best set I've found out of UClick so far).

Cheers...
