The SE rating of this puzzle (Berthier 44745) is not very high, but is this sudoku solvable manually?

There is a remote pair move for the start:
Code: Select all
 *-----------------------------------------------------------------*
 |  1-67  2  3     |  4      5       167     | #67   8       9     |
 |  4     5 #67    |  267    8       9       |  1    2367    367   |
 |  167   9  8     |  267    12367   12367   |  25   2567    4     |
 |-----------------+-------------------------+---------------------|
 |  25    8  1     |  2567   2367    4       |  9    23567   367   |
 |  3     6  4     |  1      9       257     |  25   257     8     |
 |  259   7  29    |  8      236     2356    |  4    2356    1     |
 |-----------------+-------------------------+---------------------|
 | @267   1  5     |  9      267     8       |  3    4      @67    |
 |  8     4 #267   |  3      1267    1267    | #67   9       5     |
 |  679   3  679   |  567    4       567     |  8    1       2     |
 *-----------------------------------------------------------------*

With the strong link for 2 in box 7 you either have a remote pair 67 in c37 or c7/r7 => -67r1c1
After that the puzzle is moderate.

The puzzle is in W4. Whips[4] are very short, easy to find, chain patterns. So, yes, of course, the puzzle can be solved manually.

Code: Select all
Resolution state after Singles and whips[1]:
   +-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+
   ! 167   2     3     ! 4     5     167   ! 67    8     9     !

   ! 167   9     8     ! 267   12367 12367 ! 2567  2567  4     !
   +-------------------+-------------------+-------------------+

120 candidates.

Here is the simplest-first solution in W4: Show
naked-pairs-in-a-column: c7{r1 r8}{n6 n7} ==> r5c7≠7, r3c7≠7, r3c7≠6
biv-chain[2]: r7n2{c5 c1} - c3n2{r8 r6} ==> r6c5≠2
whip[4]: b9n7{r7c9 r8c7} - r1n7{c7 c6} - r3n7{c6 c8} - r5n7{c8 .} ==> r7c1≠7
biv-chain[3]: r7c1{n6 n2} - c3n2{r8 r6} - c3n9{r6 r9} ==> r9c3≠6
finned-x-wing-in-columns: n6{c3 c7}{r8 r2} ==> r2c9≠6, r2c8≠6
finned-x-wing-in-columns: n6{c7 c3}{r8 r1} ==> r1c1≠6
whip[3]: b7n7{r9c3 r8c3} - c7n7{r8 r1} - r2n7{c8 .} ==> r9c4≠7
z-chain[4]: r9c4{n6 n5} - r9c6{n5 n7} - r7n7{c5 c9} - b9n6{r7c9 .} ==> r8c6≠6, r8c5≠6
with z-candidates = n6r9c6 n6r8c7
finned-swordfish-in-rows: n6{r8 r1 r2}{c3 c7 c6} ==> r3c6≠6
finned-swordfish-in-rows: n6{r8 r2 r1}{c7 c3 c4} ==> r3c4≠6
biv-chain[3]: b1n6{r3c1 r2c3} - r8n6{c3 c7} - r1n6{c7 c6} ==> r3c5≠6
finned-x-wing-in-columns: n6{c9 c5}{r7 r4} ==> r4c4≠6
finned-x-wing-in-columns: n6{c4 c3}{r2 r9} ==> r9c1≠6
whip[1]: r9n6{c6 .} ==> r7c5≠6
whip[1]: c5n6{r6 .} ==> r6c6≠6
naked-pairs-in-a-block: b7{r9c1 r9c3}{n7 n9} ==> r8c3≠7
whip[1]: b7n7{r9c3 .} ==> r9c6≠7
biv-chain[3]: r2c3{n7 n6} - r3n6{c1 c8} - r1c7{n6 n7} ==> r1c1≠7, r2c8≠7, r2c9≠7
singles ==> r2c9=3, r2c8=2, r3c7=5, r5c7=2, r1c1=1
naked-pairs-in-a-block: b2{r1c6 r2c4}{n6 n7} ==> r3c6≠7, r3c5≠7, r3c4≠7
naked-single ==> r3c4=2
naked-pairs-in-a-block: b5{r4c4 r5c6}{n5 n7} ==> r6c6≠5, r4c5≠7
whip[1]: c5n7{r8 .} ==> r8c6≠7
x-wing-in-columns: n2{c3 c6}{r6 r8} ==> r8c5≠2, r6c1≠2
finned-x-wing-in-rows: n7{r5 r1}{c6 c8} ==> r3c8≠7
stte

Of course, this resolution path could be shortened, even in W4, but that was not the question. And note that significantly reducing the length of a path can rarely be done manually.

I want to thank everyone for your solutions.

YZF has found that in this resolution state

| 679  3  679 | 567   4      567  | 8   1      2   |
'-------------'-------------------'----------------'

this puzzle with SER 7.9 needs dynamic forcing chains or Sashimi Mutant Squirmbag (which is even more adverse to a human) if we stick to the methods implemented in HoDoKu or YZF_Solver. I was greatly surprised at that fact. By the way, Andrew Stuart's solver uses the Pattern Overlay method to solve this puzzle.

I like Eleven's and Cenoman's solution with oddagons, but most of all I like Phil's idea of a generalized locked set. I cannot treat the set r4679c1, r9c3 as an MSLS. What do you think about it, Cenoman, how can we call such a method?

I cannot see the elimination, when the 9 is twice in r6c1 and r9c3.

Ok, there is no contradiction in blocks 1, 4, and 7. This means we cannot come to -67 r8c3 by this pattern. Thanks, Eleven. The idea was appealing but its realization failed. Sorry.
