Mikey is stuck. Please help him figure out the next step

Postby eggtone » Mon Aug 14, 2006 9:36 pm

Hi I was given this sudoku from a deck of playing cards. It was ranked easy, however, I tend to disagree with this. This was the first and only sudoku I have attempted and I feel like an idiot because I am a fairly bright individual with a strong mathematical background yet I seemed to have reached a point in this puzzle that is preventing me from going further. Please let me know if you can figure out what to do in the next step of the following puzzle.

x 6 1 3 x 5 2 x 4
x 2 4 7 1 6 5 x 3
x 5 3 2 x 4 6 x x
2 3 6 4 7 1 9 5 8
1 8 5 9 3 2 7 4 6
4 7 9 5 6 8 3 x x
5 1 2 6 4 x 8 x 9
x 4 7 8 2 9 1 x 5
x 9 8 1 5 x 4 x x

The x's are really blanks.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It should be easy, it has 10 solutions.

Hi Mikey,
It seems the puzzle you submitted is not the original puzzle. The puzzle you submitted has ten possible solutions and is therefore an invalid sudoku. Alternatively, you may have made an error in progressing to the stage you reached.

about my post (Mikey stumped and need help)

Postby eggtone » Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:01 am

The puzzle I submitted was what was left after I had solved what I was able to. It was not the original puzzle. I had checked the answers that I had so far and they were all correct up to that point. However, it appeared to me that there were multiple solutions which was why I was so stumped what to do next. Below is the original Sudoku:

x6xxx52x4
x2xx16xx3
x53xx4xxx
2xxx719x8
1xx9xx74x
4x9x6xxxx
x126xx8x9
x4782x1x5
xxxx5x4xx

Let me know if there is a definite solution to this puzzle.

Thanks.

Genuine sudoku puzzles, such as those published by Pappocom, have only one solution - the puzzle you submitted has more than one solution which means there are no logical steps to eliminate the remaining candidates other than guessing. As such, there is no definite solution to this puzzle.

Thanks for your help. I really thought something was wrong with this puzzle yet my friends thought I was a dumbass because I couldn't get the answer that was posted on the back of the card.

You're the bestest.
