I'm not understanding the 3rd term. I was expecting the -r5c2 to refer to the previous number (8), but there's no 8 in r5c2 so I'm confused.

If 9 is in r4c9 it cannot be in r4c2, 8 remains in r2c4. There are only two 9's in col 2 so, 9 must go in r5c2 pushing 4 to r5c5 leaving 5 in r6c6, so the elimination of 5 inr6c9, is it clear?

Ngisa, your solution is clear and valid. It's the notation that's confusing. You wrote:

(5=9)r4c9-(9=8)r4c2-r5c2=(4)r5c5-(4=5)r6c6 =>-5r6c9

The fact that 8 remains in r4c2 is irrelevant to the solution and doesn't contribute to the following term. I think you meant to write:

(5=9)r4c9-(9)r4c2 = (9-4)r5c2=(4)r5c5-(4=5)r6c6 =>-5r6c9
