London Evening Standard - Puzzler Media Ltd

The Difficult puzzle in the London Evening Standard yesterday is not difficult but appears to have multiple solutions. I have asked Puzzler Media for their coments but this may be a provider to be wary of if you like pure Sudoku.

Code: Select all
 *-----------*
 |...|..1|...|
 |...|..9|.2.|
 |829|7..|...|
 |---+---+---|
 |2..|6..|.43|
 |.97|...|...|
 |..3|..5|8..|
 |---+---+---|
 |...|49.|7..|
 |4..|.6.|2..|
 |.3.|..8|1..|
 *-----------*

According to Simple Sudoku it is invalid and has 5 solutions. It could be a misprint by the newspaper - which has been known to happen.

Luna,

Sure, but the answer in the paper today confirms the original grid as posted in the paper.

With so many providers of sudokus thes days, it may help to know those that work at different levela

As I understand it Puzzler Media get their puzzles from Nikoli, who have been hand-crafting puzzles for the Japanese market for more than 20 years - so they should be reliable.

Or you'll just have to buy a Pappocom Paper! - listed here

Thanks Luna. I do the Pappocoms in The Times (as well as the Killer and the Main Crossword). The Standard is just something to do on the bus to the station in the evening.:D

Not all of Puzzler Media's puzzles are by Nikoli. The puzzles in their Sudoku Puzzles magazine, for example, are non-Nikoli puzzles. The non-Nikoli puzzles are all symmetrical, but some of them have an odd symmetry. That Evening Standard puzzle looks like a non-Nikoli one.

not 5-solutional puzzle anymore

Postby claudiarabia » Sun Jun 18, 2006 1:52 am

Simple sudoku says, the mentioned puzzle allegedly from the London Evening Standard has 5 solutions.

Here a one-solutional proposal which resembles the sudoku in LES

Code: Select all
. . .|. . 1|. . .
8 . .|. . 9|. 2 .
. 2 9|7 . .|3 . .
------------------
2 . .|. . .|. 4 3
. 9 7|. 5 .|. . .
. . 4|. . .|8 . .
------------------
. . .|5 6 .|7 . .
4 . .|. 9 .|2 . .
. 3 .|. . 8|. 1 .

seems to be a deadly pattern in the end.

i reckon they missed out a couple of clues:
Code: Select all
 . . . | . . 1 | . . .
 . . . | . . 9 | . 2 .
 8 2 9 | 7 . . | 3 . .
 ------+-------+------
 2 . . | 6 . . | . 4 3
 . 9 7 | . . . | . . .
 . . 3 | . . 5 | 8 . .
 ------+-------+------
 . . 6 | 4 9 . | 7 . .
 4 . . | . 6 . | 2 . .
 . 3 . | . . 8 | 1 . .

needs locked candidates, which is often counted as hard in newspapers.
