JC, sorry to be so slow on your chain, but I can't seem to recognize the logic or notation of that middle node. Is it an abbreviated network? The best I could come up with for the elimination was Kraken column (8)c3:
Code: Select all
(1=78)r5c51 - 8r46c3
               ||
              8r8c3 – (8=1)r8c6 => –1r8c5
               ||
              (8-1)r9c3 = 1r8c3 => –1r8c5

Is that the right idea?

JC, ...

That's the right idea, I think, but since 1r8c3 and 1r8c6 and the elimination target, are in the same row, you can think of it like this:

Code: Select all
1r8c5 - (1=78)r5c15 - 8r46c3
                        ||
                   +-------------------------+
                   |    ||                   |
                   |  8r8c3 –-------- 8r8c6  |
                   |    ||              ||   |
                   |  8r9c3 - 1r9c3     ||   |
                   |            ||      ||   |
                   |          1r8c3 - 1r8c6 --- 1r8c5
                   |                         |
                   | 3D Swordfish            |
                   +-------------------------+

What I "boxed up" and called a "3D swordfish", is a rank-0 pattern that, on its own, would eliminate 1r8c5.
As such, it can serve as a single node in an AIC.

[ Added: It isn't important that it's a rank-0 pattern, but since it is, it shows the final elimination to be a "rank-1 elimination", similar to the eliminations for normal/simple AICs. Kraken eliminations are usually "rank 2" or higher. ]

An closely related alternative to JC's chain, is:
    (1=78)r5c15 - (8=469)r146c3 - (6=18)r8c36 => -1r8c5
I'm guessing that JC chose to show it like he did, because the "(natural) SIS" count is smaller by two, than in what's above.

Hi Marty. Your W-Wing is OK but your start PM is different from those of the other solutions.

aka

Code: Select all
(1=7)r5c5 - (7=8)r5c1 - 8r46c3 = hp(18)r89c3 - 6r8c3 = np(18)r8c36  =>  -1 r8c5

So, in summary, we seem to have the following:
JC Van Hay wrote:
Code: Select all
[(1=78)r5c51 - 8r46c3=(81)r89c3,r8c6] - (1=7)r8c5; stte
Comment: Middle node definitely above my pay grade.

              8r8c3 – (8=1)r8c6 => –1r8c5
               ||
              (8-1)r9c3 = 1r8c3 => –1r8c5
Comment: Well, it's a network, but I can understand my own stuff. Aka a “3D Swordfish,” courtesy blue.

blue wrote:
Code: Select all
(1=78)r5c15 - (8=469)r146c3 - (6=18)r8c36 => -1r8c5
Comment: My favorite. Three linked ALS, with bonus that cell (189)r9c3 is not used.

Comment: Longer chain, but uses only simple elements and is easy to understand.

Bottom Line: Thanks to all for the constructive feedback!
