Jellyfish technique not working fine for this puzzle

Postby kk123 » Sun Mar 30, 2008 6:25 am

I reached following position (pls see the attached image) in solving a puzzle,

http://rapidshare.com/files/103463417/untitled1.jpg.html

I applied "Jellyfish" technique to the columns 1,4 and 9 (highlighted in cyan, all containing 9s), and trying to eliminate all other 9s in the respective rows (highlighted in pink). I am unable to eliminate 9 in the cell r1c5. Why?[/url]

kk123, i saw that you use SimpleSudoko. Press Edit/Copy or CTRL+C to copy puzzle and grid. Then you can paste it to a posting (or editor) with CTRL+V or right mouse click & Paste.
In the posting mark it with the mouse and click on the "Code" button to get this (use the Preview button to check it):

I wonder, if you just wanted us to see the rapidshare site (be sure i dont like it), because SS tells you as a next step that there is a single 1 in box 1. It also has no problem to solve it with x-wing and swordfish. Both techniques are well described on the Simple Sudoku site.
However - after the x-wing i would take a xy-wing to solve it, for me easier to see than a swordfish.

Now to your question: A jellyfish needs 4 rows/columns the candidate is restricted to. Your marked candidates (in rows 1369) are only restricted to 3 columns, as you mentioned.

Thanks guys,

I had misunderstood the Jellyfish technique and was applying it wrongly!! Well it should be 4 rows and 4 columns.

"The candidate can appear less than 4 times in a row" was interpreted by me as "I can have 4 rows and <= 4 columns" -that was my mistake.

Next time I will copy and paste from Simple Sudoku, I did not know that.
