Phil,
I'm probably way off track here, but doesn't a finned-fish elimination have to apply independently to its single-digit grid?

I read your fish as c68\r79 + fr1c8,
but I can also write a 5s grid where fr1c8 and PEr7c1 are both true. I don't think that should happen.
Code: Select all
   .  .  .  | -5  .  .  |  . f5  .
   .  .  .  |  5  .  .  | -5  .  .
   .  .  5  |  .  .  .  |  .  .  .
 -----------+-----------+----------
   .  .  .  |  .  .  .  |  .  .  5
  -5  5  .  |  .  .  .  |  .  .  .
   .  .  .  |  .  5  .  |  .  .  .
 -----------+-----------+----------
 pe5  .  .  |  .  . -5  | -5 -5  .
   . -5  .  |  .  .  .  |  5  .  .
   .  .  .  |  .  .  5  | -5 -5  .

Steve

But that's the point: if 5at r1c8 is false, x-wing => -5 r7c1. If it is true, then r5c1 is true, again => -5 r7c1

Thx, Phil...I'm definitely off-track on this one. See if you can help clear the confusion. The issue for me is the different handling of a single-digit-grid Fish elimination, vice that of a Fish within a grid having other non-fish candidates.

My current understanding is that the single-digit 5s grid, standing alone, would NOT eliminate 5r7c1 via a Fish pattern. I think this was illustrated above since fr1c8 and PEr7c1 can both be true. Would you concur?

Hence, the (unfinned) Fish pattern must be false, whatever that means! So, when fin 5r1c8 is now considered true in the full grid, one can incorporate other (non-5) candidate digits in a chain, as you did, to complete the desired elimination.

Is this anywhere close?

Steve

I'm not sure I follow. You seem to be making it more complicated than it need be. The 5 at r1c8 must be either true or false. If it is false then the x-wing eliminates the 5 at r7c1. Now, if the 5 at r1c8 is true, the short chain makes the 5 at r5c1 true, which again eliminates the 5 at r7c1. The second part has nothing to do with fish patterns. The strategy is graced by the term "Kraken Fish" (see http://sudopedia.enjoysudoku.com/Kraken_Fish.html).

Let me try to say it another way. The finned fish is valid, but has no eliminations. Nothing further can be deduced from the finned fish taken alone.

Hence, the (unfinned) Fish pattern must be false, whatever that means!

That can't be concluded from the single digit pattern. Either the fish is true or the fin is true, but we can't say which without more information.

The elimination comes from using the fish as a link in a chain. The chain is a multi-digit technique. The link of the chain involving the fish is made from the conclusion mentioned earlier: either the fish is true or the fin is true.

Thx to Phil and Jason for the helpful feedback! I know you are both right.
I'll need some time to realign my thinking!
