Marty, this is a neat idea, but I don't quite follow. I get your chains, but I conclude from them that if r1c9 is not 1 then r1c8 is 1. I don't see a contradiction there. It does give us -1 r1c7, and along the way we get -7 r1c9, but I don't see 1r1c9.
