Same solution as Leren but using new notation for block/position instead of row/column would be interested in comments.

Code: Select all
 *--------------------------------------------------*
 | 5    16   8    | 7    4    3    | 2    169 b69   |
 | 4    16   3    | 9    2    5    |b167  8   b67   |
 | 2    7    9    | 8    1    6    | 4    3    5    |
 |----------------+----------------+----------------|
 | 1    2    6    | 4    59   8    | 59   7    3    |
 | 3    8    7    | 2    59   1    | 569  569  4    |
 | 9    5    4    | 3    6    7    |a18   12   28   |
 |----------------+----------------+----------------|
 | 7    4    2    | 56   8    9    | 3    56   1    |
 | 6    3    5    | 1    7    2    |a89   4    8-9  |
 | 8    9    1    | 56   3    4    | 567  256  267  |
 *--------------------------------------------------*
(9=1)r68c7-(1=9)b3p346 => -9r8c9; ste

It's clear enough, but you're introducing alternate terminology to save four keystrokes. Is it worth it?

I'm all for saving keystrokes, as is obvious from my ruthless pruning of unnecessary r's and c's, but Steve's point is valid enough, the b is obvious enough but the p threw me for a moment... not a big deal though... also a factor is that this case seldom arises - even I don't mind taking a bit more trouble when it seems worth while. The pros and cons in this case are about equal I think - it's a toss-up - and I don't like over-standardization. Originality and inventiveness should be encouraged. Even in notation.

By the way, I've not copyrighted my omission of the r's and c's. Everybody may copy this without payment of royalties.

One final plea because I'm rapidly losing hope that this forum will survive.

Does no one here remember the difficulties they had when first started tackling Sudoku and all the mental hurdles that had to be jumped? Taking out the passenger digits from ANSs etc (with no look-up reference available) just makes these hurdles higher. The more inaccessible we make our posts to new players, the more we will drive them to alternative sites and the quicker this forum will die.

And then, are there any alternative sites now? The daily sudoku site appears to be running on fumes.

Sudoku is dead. Long live Sudoku!
Forums in general are dying out, the craze is now for facebook-type communication.
I see sudoku as trying to keep afloat although bogged down with unsuitable clothing.
But here's some good news! :
I've just realised my 123 notation is highly (66%) redundant, in view of the existing a,b,c notation. It can be replaced with the alpha-numeric system already in use! Instead of 123-124=524 etc, we can just write a1-b(1=5). The cells involved are already labelled with letters, there is no need to state the row or column at all.

Apples and oranges. Facebook has nothing to do with the status of sudoku forums. In fact, it's very possible that if the Eureka forum hadn't been hacked, there would still be strong participation in solving the Extremes there today.

Also, while facebook may have affected social-based forum sites, it hasn't affected forums in the same brain-game category as sudoku: ie. chess and adventure (puzzle) games, both of which I have taken part in for years.
