Hi helenharry,

I program & construct puzzles regularly.

The main reason for constructing the opening configuration symmetrically is for aesthetic reasons only.

In most cases this has no relationship with the puzzle's uniqueness, difficulty or solving techniques

There are some puzzles that are constructed specifically to show certain clues to symmetrically pair with other specific clues. This feature can be used to advance the solution with that in mind.
