How to compile a Sudoku?

Postby gandalf » Tue Sep 26, 2006 6:44 pm

I was just wondering when whoever compiles a Sudoku is it always done by computer or can it be done by hand? If it can be done by hand can you remove any numbers or must it be certain numbers?

you can certainly produce sudokus by hand, I have made several. It's a bit like solving except you have to be a bit more careful. Choose the squares you want to be clues, 28 or thereabouts is quite easy to do by hand then you fill in one of the other squares and place some clues to make that so. Continue in that fashion until you have a valid puzzle, an invalid puzzle or a puzzle with multiple solutions. If you're careful enough you'll get a valid puzzle.

I don't think this is the right forum to discuss this. I fear that pappocom doesn't like this sort of discussion here, maybe try the sudoku programmers forum.
