how much in your head

Hi,

I'm new this forum but have signed up because of my increasing interest and skill with this puzzle. I was wondering up to what point or what "difficulty" of puzzles can one reasonably solve sudoku puzzles in their head. I have found that it took me not too long to zip through easy and medium puzzles without making any pencil notations. However as I encounter many more difficult puzzles that I find that it is unavoidable to spot turbot fish or skyscrapers for instance without stuff penciled in. Hidden or naked doubles yes but that's about it. Not trying to save pencil or eraser expenses ;-) Just trying to see where my "head is at" and/or how mentally aware I could be in solving these puzzles faster.
