Herald Sun 24/05/05

This game is flawed when there are two different answers to the same puzzle.

According to the SuKoDu website the answer for the Melbourne Herald Sun Tuesday 23rd May 2005, is as follows:

796 834 512
185 927 643
324 651 789
452 186 937
831 279 456
679 345 128
543 762 891
217 598 364
968 413 275

My answer:
796 834 512
184 257 369
325 691 784
452 186 937
831 972 456
679 345 128
543 728 691
217 569 843
968 413 275

My numbers all fit correctly.

Obviously the numbers given should ensure there is only one answer. I would suggest the providers of the puzzle to the Herald Sun, should ensure the starting numbers guarantee only one answer.

Well I'm just taking your word that your answer is correct, but I just checked the answer that I got today and it's the same as the one you said you got off the website, so if you're right, I guess you found another answer.. My girlfriend got the same answer as me today though, so maybe you did something wrong..

What was the initial puzzle?

Is this one that is set by Pappocom? cos AFAIK, he's never been wrong yet about them having a unique solution.

Why don't you post the original puzzle, then we'll find out.

Are these puzzles supplied by Pappocom?

Hi, Disgruntled User.

The posted puzzle is an Easy puzzle from Pappocom. One of mine!

At the end of r2, you have a group "369". If you check the actual puzzle again, that last group is "6.." That is, you have put a "3" where the puzzle already has a 6-clue. The clues are fixed, of course - they can't be moved around.

Perhaps you solved the puzzle on a copy you made? and in making the copy, you made a transcription error. Probably you omitted that clue altogether. That left you free to put into the empty cell whatever seemed to make sense at the time.

Incidentally, if you make your copy of the puzzle with the Dub feature of the Sudoku program, there are checks and balances which help you avoid making mistakes while copying.
