I just learned "coloring" and have zipped along with about 50 puzzles with no problem. I came across this puzzle tonight with Simple Sudoku and tried lots of different ways to solve it. I finally gave up and hit the hint button. It says that coloring with 7's is the next step. I can't figure out the reason why you exclude the 7 in the cell R5C5 (marked **) the program says. Here is the puzzle. I used A and B for the coloring. (I also tried to line them up with extra spaces and the computer wouldn't accept them - sorry)

*--------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 29 6 3 | 8 1 29 | 7 5 4 |
| 4 8 79B | 679 679 5 | 3 1 2 |
| 5 27A 1 | 3 27B 4 | 6 9 8 |
|----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
| 23679 279 26 | 5679 8 379A | 1 4 359 |
| 379 5 8 | 479 479** 1 | 2 6 39 |
| 369 1 4 | 569 269 239 | 8 7 359 |
|----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
| 2679 279 26 | 479 479 8 | 5 3 1 |
| 1 3 79A | 2 5 79B | 4 8 6 |
| 8 4 5 | 1 3 6 | 9 2 7 |
*--------------------------------------------------------------------*

R5C5 isn't an intersect with an A & B, nor does it fit any of the other rules I learned. Am I missing something here? Thanks loads,

Cam

Read this post for tips on how to make grids, etc: New topics - How to ask for help [Updated: 09 January 2006]

1) Make your grids in a text editor using monospaced fonts.
2) Type [code] before your grid and [/code] after
3) Make sure the box "Disable BBCode" is UNCHECKED.

Code: Select all

 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*
 | 29     6      3      | 8      1      29     | 7      5      4      |
 | 4      8     +79     | 679    679    5      | 3      1      2      |
 | 5     -27     1      | 3     +27     4      | 6      9      8      |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 23679  279    26     | 5679   8     -379    | 1      4      359    |
 | 379    5      8      | 479   [479]   1      | 2      6      39     |
 | 369    1      4      | 569    269    239    | 8      7      359    |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 2679   279    26     | 479    479    8      | 5      3      1      |
 | 1      3     -79     | 2      5     +79     | 4      8      6      |
 | 8      4      5      | 1      3      6      | 9      2      7      |
 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*

r5c5 is in the same column as a PLUS (r3c5) and the same box as a MINUS (r4c6). Since one of them must be a 7, it cannot be 7.
