Help with Bonus Game 4 from Brisbane Courier Mail

Postby lindah » Thu Jun 16, 2005 2:32 am

Hi there, we're new to Sudoku and need some assistance -
Can anyone help with some logic to eliminate more numbers from the following game - the numbers we have so far are:

1** 5** *94
**9 7** 8**
*** *6* *13

4** 2** ***
*8* *** *6*
*** **6 **8

65* *2* *87
**1 **7 9**
897 **4 **1

We have the following possibilities for the missing numbers line by line :

2367; 2368; 38; 238; 267
235; 2346; 134; 123; 25; 256
257; 247; 2458; 489 289; 257

1367; 356; 13789; 1358; 135; 357; 59
23579; 235; 134; 13479; 135; 12345; 259
23579; 1237; 235; 134; 12479; 12345; 23457

34; 19; 19; 34
23; 234; 368; 358; 345; 56
36; 35; 2356; 235

Although we have the answers, we need to know how we can now eliminate some more numbers from our possibilities.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Take a good look at column 5...

If you look carefully then you will see three numbers that will need to go in exactly the same three cells.

(If you have trouble seeing it, then pretend that r1c4 and r9c1 is not filled in.)

When you're done with it, then you should be able to remove some candidates from box 5, and this will lead to only one place for the number 8 in box 5.

Thank you for your response - it's helped enormously and we've managed to finally get the puzzle finished.
