Help with a symmetry problem

Postby re'born » Sat Sep 22, 2007 9:43 pm

Code: Select all
. 3 .|9 . .|. . 8
. 1 8|. 3 4|2 6 9
. . .|8 . 2|3 . .
-----+-----+-----
9 . 7|. 2 .|. 3 6
1 . 4|6 . 3|. . 2
6 2 3|. 9 8|5 . 1
-----+-----+-----
. 6 5|2 . 7|. . 3
. 7 1|3 4 9|6 . 5
3 . .|. . 6|. . .

Can anyone help me eliminate clues from the above puzzle to leave a symmetric puzzle (any symmetry will do)? If several options are available, the one with the minimal ER rating would be preferred.

Edit- Additional restrictions: 1) Keep r2c2=1
2) ER >= 7.0

TIA,
re'born

Here is one, 30 clues, not minimal, symmetric, ER=7.0

Code: Select all
 . . . | 9 . . | . . 8
 . . 8 | . 3 4 | 2 . .
 . . . | 8 . 2 | 3 . .
-------+-------+-------
 9 . 7 | . 2 . | . 3 .
 1 . . | 6 . 3 | . . 2
 . 2 . | . 9 . | 5 . 1
-------+-------+-------
 . . 5 | 2 . 7 | . . .
 . . 1 | 3 4 . | 6 . .
 3 . . | . . 6 | . . .

 . . 1 | 3 4 . | 6 . .
 3 . . | . . 6 | . . .

Thank you JPF. It is very close to what I am looking for. More precisely, after seeing yours, I know that what I need contains at least one more constraint, namely, I want r2c2=1 as a given. Is it still possible with symmetry (I don't care about minimality)?

Code: Select all
*-----------------------*
| . . . | 9 . . | . . 8 |
| . . 8 | . 3 4 | . 6 . |
| . . . | 8 . 2 | 3 . . |
|-------+-------+-------|

| 1 . . | 6 . 3 | . . 2 |
| . 2 . | . 9 . | 5 . 1 |
|-------+-------+-------|
| . . 5 | 2 . 7 | . . . |
| . 7 . | 3 4 . | 6 . . |
| 3 . . | . . 6 | . . . |

You can add [r2c2]=1 and [r8c8]=8 to mine or JPF's puzzles!

Thanks for joining in! It seems that when I add both, the puzzle becomes too easy. Hmm. So I guess I also need to add the following restriction: ER>=7.0. Yikes, I feel ignorant that I can't do this myself. I better add all of this to the top post...

{Withdrawn] I forgot that my puzzle generator limits the difficulty of the puzzles it current generates.

If adding [r8c8]=8 is allowed ...
here's one with ER=7.1

Code: Select all
 . . . | 9 . . | . . 8
 . 1 . | . 3 4 | 2 6 .
 . . . | 8 . 2 | 3 . .
-------+-------+-------
 9 . 7 | . 2 . | . 3 6
 . . . | . . . | . . .
 6 2 . | . 9 . | 5 . 1
-------+-------+-------
 . . 5 | 2 . 7 | . . .
 . 7 1 | 3 4 . | . 8 .
 3 . . | . . 6 | . . .

This one will work quite nicely. In fact, I add two more values (but keep the symmetry) and get exactly what I want. Thanks JPF (and daj).
