Hearts (for gentlemen only)

Postby m_b_metcalf » Thu Feb 01, 2007 1:43 am

Gentlemen,
Valentine's Day is soon upon us and we need to suitably impress the ladies (who may be making similar attempts to impress us). Last year's efforts were very pretty but not too difficult. Can we find an appropriate SE 10+ pearl?

Here are a few first attempts and suggestions.

Regards,

Mike Metcalf

We start with a 23-clue heart:
Code: Select all
 . 6 3 . . . 1 7 .
 9 . . 1 . 2 . . 3
 8 . . . 9 . . . 6
 6 . . . 5 . . . 7
 7 . . . . . . . 4 SE 8.4
 . 9 . . . . . 8 .
 . . 1 . . . 4 . .
 . . . 9 . 3 . . .
 . . . . 4 . . . .

followed by a 22-clue heart:
Code: Select all
 . 6 7 . . . 1 3 .
 3 . . 9 . 5 . . 6
 2 . . . 7 . . . 8
 8 . . . . . . . 3
 1 . . . . . . . 9
 . 4 . . . . . 5 .
 . . 3 . . . 7 . .
 . . . 8 . 3 . . . easy
 . . . . 4 . . . .

and one with 21 clues:
Code: Select all
 . . 5 . . . 7 . .
 . 9 . 8 . 1 . 5 .
 6 . . . 2 . . . 4
 3 . . . 7 . . . 2 SE 7.3
 2 . . . . . . . 1
 . 5 . . . . . 4 .
 . . 8 . . . 9 . .
 . . . 4 . 5 . . .
 . . . . 1 . . . .

This last one has a possible variant:
Code: Select all
 . . . . . . . . .
 . x x x . x x x .
 x . . . x . . . x
 x . . . x . . . x
 x . . . . . . . x
 . x . . . . . x .
 . . x . . . x . .
 . . . x . x . . .
 . . . . x . . . .

that I haven't been able to find. Similarly for a 20-clue heart:
Code: Select all
 . . x . . . x . .
 . x . x . x . x .
 x . . . x . . . x
 x . . . . . . . x
 x . . . . . . . x
 . x . . . . . x .
 . . x . . . x . .
 . . . x . x . . .
 . . . . x . . . .

JPF, where are you?

Of course, hearts are sometimes broken, as in:
Code: Select all
 . 9 7 . . . . 6 .   23 - 3, SE 7.2
 3 . . 4 . 2 . . 5
 1 . . . 7 . . . .
 . . . . 9 . . . 2
 7 . . . . . . . 8
 . 8 . . . . . 3 .
 . . 5 . . . 9 . .
 . . . 6 . 7 . . .
 . . . . 3 . . . .

or
Code: Select all
 . 6 7 . . . 1 . .
 . . . 9 . 1 . . 4
 5 . . . 7 . . . 8   22 - 2, SE 4.4
 4 . . . . . . . 3
 1 . . . . . . . 9
 . 2 . . . . . 6 .
 . . 9 . . . 7 . .
 . . . 3 . 8 . . .
 . . . . 5 . . . .

or
Code: Select all
 . . . . . . 6 . .   21 - 1, SE 7.4
 . 4 . 9 . 7 . 1 .
 1 . . . 3 . . . 8
 4 . . . 8 . . . 5
 6 . . . . . . . 3
 . 1 . . . . . 9 .
 . . 9 . . . 3 . .
 . . . 2 . 4 . . .
 . . . . 7 . . . .

Also, hearts can be tilted, as in:
Code: Select all
 . . . . 3 . . . . 23-clues, tilted, SE 8.4
 . . . 2 . 5 . . .
 . . 8 . . 4 . . .
 . 6 . . . 7 5 8 .
 1 . . . 6 . . . 3
 4 . . . . . . 9 .
 3 . . . . . 1 . .
 2 . . . . 9 . . .
 8 9 5 1 2 . . . .

and here too there are many variants possible.

Brilliant! Your 20-clue is unshakable but, with two small changes, the first one can become a broken heart:( :
Code: Select all
 . . . . . . . . .
 . 3 9 . . 8 4 2 .
 4 . . . 6 . . . 9
 1 . . . 8 . . . 6
 7 . . . . . . . 2 SE 7.2
 . 2 . . . . . 9 .
 . . 8 . . . 1 . .
 . . . 2 . 3 . . .
 . . . . 7 . . . .

Congratulations again.

Since most ladies might be in doubt about your love, when you give them an ER 7.2 puzzle, here are some alternatives for this pattern:
Code: Select all
 +-------+-------+-------+
 | . . . | . . . | . . . |
 | . 9 8 | 4 . 7 | 1 3 . |
 | 6 . . | . 9 . | . . 2 |
 +-------+-------+-------+
 | 2 . . | . 3 . | . . 5 |
 | 1 . . | . . . | . . 8 |
 | . 4 . | . . . | . 9 . |
 +-------+-------+-------+
 | . . 6 | . . . | 4 . . |
 | . . . | 8 . 1 | . . . |
 | . . . | . 5 . | . . . |
 +-------+-------+-------+ ER 7.1

..........546.381.7...2...59...4...36.......9.8.....5...3...6.....8.5.......1.... ER 5.6

..........164.798.7...6...55...9...31.......6.4.....7...9...5.....7.8.......1.... ER 2.3
..........749.813.6...4...88...6...32.......1.3.....4...1...5.....4.7.......3.... ER 2.0
