I haven't thought about this before but would looking at symmetrical patterns of 25 clues & below the checking for validity/minimality - be a better option then minimizing then checking for symmetry ?

It's exactly what I do : with all the patterns for symmetry type I and for all patterns of 28 clues or less for symmetries type II,III,IV
