General tips for Hard puzzles

Postby catadmiral » Wed Dec 14, 2005 6:30 pm

So I've been playing Sudoku for a while, but this is the first time I've looked at this site. It seems I've figured out a lot of the strategies that you all have assigned names to in order to talk about them more clearly, but I have no idea what you guys are talking about!
I'm looking for general tips on solving the Hard level puzzles for someone who can do the Medium puzzles in 7-12 minutes. The techniques I use on the Medium just don't seem to be enough and I can't figure out any new ones. And please, don't use the names of the techniques because I will have no idea what you're talking about! Thanks!

Heh - reminds me of myself a few months ago.

Go to my site,
http://www.SuDoku.funURL.com/

Download the SuDoku Scratch Pad (SSP3)

Ignore everything in the ZIP except SolveN11.txt (unless you want to try the scratchpad out)

SolveN11.txt contains a description of solving techniques devoid of jargon except as an afterthought. You can ignore the jargon and still get through it all.

Let me know if it helps.

There is also some useful websites that you might want to take a look at.

http://www.angusj.com/sudoku/hints.php

http://www.simes.clara.co.uk/programs/sudokutechniques.htm

For Hard puzzles you don't need to use X-Wing or Swordfish techniques, normally Pairs (Naked/Hidden) or a Triplet (Naked/Hidden) or just cells with a single candidate to solve them.

Hope this is of help to you.:)

Hey, thanks Mac. That file is perfect! I haven't read it through yet, but looking towards the end, it gives me a couple new ideas.

And Crazy Girl, thanks for the links. I don't have time to check them out right now, but I bet they'll help, too.

Thanks, guys!
