Postby BobDingley » Wed Sep 14, 2005 12:07 pm

Hey guys i am looking for a solver, not one that just solves it for you but helps you with showing moves you can do and all that. So really i want a helper but i dont want one of those stupid trail ones that run out after 30 days, i want it to be free for public use with no payment required.

Can someone plz point me in a direction of a FREE sudoku helper to solver the puzzles.

For those of you who don't want to download anything, or have a Mac or Linux box (the program mentioned above requires Windows), there's an online solver here: http://www.sudokuhints.com.

It can give you hints, or solve one step for you explaining which rule it used. Also it has three grid sizes, optional pencilmarks, undo, five new graded puzzles every day, and an extensive archive of puzzles.

I think those 'trail' [sic] ones are stupid too. I mean, fancy spending hours writing a program to assist complete strangers to solve puzzles that no-one is making them do and then expecting them to pay for it! The sheer nerve...

One of my own tools

Postby ovaltrade » Thu Sep 15, 2005 3:45 pm

My current interest is to create the fastest Sudoku solver around:!: .

This personnal project involves a lot of analysis of various strategies balanced with the programming of highly optimized algorithms. So, at some point in time, I needed a tool to quickly "see" all candidate possibilities. This turn out to be quite a useful tool which can be used for other purposes like studying step by step manual solving of any type of Sudoku puzzle. And it can find unique solutions too because it uses my Sudoku solver as a subroutine.

This tool (Ovalku) is not intended to replace any other available solver program and it has its pitfalls. It is freely available at http://ovaltrade.com/sudoku/ovaltrade/ovalku.zip as a main VB6 program (EXE) and its companion DLL. Unzip into a test directory and experiment by clicking Ovalku.exe !!!

Thanks for another helpful compilation of information which eliminates the need to search through miles of randomly relevant information.
