First Puzzle

Postby lunababy_moonchild » Mon Dec 12, 2005 7:28 pm

I just want to know, does anybody remember the very first puzzle that they did/attempted?

Mine was the Daily Mail's Codenumber, as it was then known, which appeared sometime around mid-November 2004. I completed it a lot more slowly than I anticipated and it's that one that placed me on my journey of discovery:D

It was The Times for me. Have been addicted since they first produced them just over a year ago - can't remember the exact date - but I now have to do the Difficult or Fiendish as well as the Killer every day. I usually let my hubby do the Easy one though!

From what I remember, the Times did a big article - an interview with Wayne Gould and 4 different difficulty puzzles (Easy, Medium, Hard & Very Hard) in their T2 section (now Times 2) on the Friday 12 November 2004 and on the following Monday they started to publish them on the back pages of T2 (and I was hooked).

On this same Monday (15 November 2004) the Daily Mail published their 'Codenumber', and later claimed that they first introduced the puzzle to the UK ( but the Times beat them by 3 Days:!: )

Ha! I remember the day very well (just not the actual date). There it was, this innocuous looking little puzzle. You know what they said: There is only one rule. Fill in every ..................

How hard can that be? I thought. Two or three hours later, and I was well and truly hooked.

Excellent, I can do Fiendish in 35 minutes (down from 3 days), on a good day and I have been known to do more than one - that would be more than one puzzle not more than one Fiendish! - in the same day. Killer, though, is beyond me and frankly I just don't understand Kakuro (can't add, that's the problem), so you have my total respect:D

I didn't realise that it was 15 November though, Crazy Girl, thanks for the information.
