Thanks (if it referred to my solution)! Not as nice as yours, but both are beyond Hodoku's capabilities, which makes them more satisfying. It's kind of weird that it's so good with ANS nodes but totally blind to AHS ones. It's also a pity that it's an excellent fish finder but can't use almost-fishes in chains (except as explicit krakens).

Anyway, your solution made me think about the fish notation in chains. (Yes, I know you're not very interested in notation issues, but humor me.)

That's pretty much how I would have written it too (though I rarely spot almost-fishes), until now. While it's perfectly good and understandable, it also requires defining the fish as text, which I'd rather avoid if possible. How about using the UFG notation? With that there's no need to use the explicit fish name, which makes it quite neat, concise, and unambiguous:

(9)r2c6 = c36\r79 - (9=64)r94c9 - (4=56)r2c98

Wouldn't that work? The backslash implies a fish, whose size, shape, and type (or "special qualities") can be deduced from the rest.
